2010 Cobourg Tri/Du

Four IronStride athletes competed in the 2010 Cobourg Tri/Du events on August 28th & 29th in Cobourg, Ontario.

Monica LaBarge and Rick Hunt tackled the Olympic Tri course on the Saturday. Fortunately there were no crazy weather issues this year (last year’s swims had to be cancelled) - just the perennial crazy hills on the bike course to contend with. Monica had a great day, finishing 5th woman overall and 1st in her age category - setting herself up nicely for her next event - the Syracuse Half Ironman on September 19th.

On the Sunday, Head Coach Randy Zabukovec (still having fun!) improved upon his previous-week showing in Cornwall, placing 3rd overall and 1st out of 14 in his age category in the Sprint Tri event. Mike O’Reilly, already looking forward to training for a full season of racing next year, competed in the Sprint Duathlon and came away with a bronze in his age category!

Off to University!

Three of IronStride’s young adult athletes are heading off to university after a great summer of training and racing.

Lauren Sagadore, in her third year at UBC, is studying in Paris, France for the next 8 months;
Annie Foreman-Mackey is heading back to McMaster in Hamilton, Ontario for her 2nd year of study;
and Jaky Kueper is starting her first year at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec.

All the best to Lauren, Annie and Jaky. We look forward to seeing them back with Team IronStride come next summer!

Ross Bell Qualifies for Worlds in Beijing

Sleepless nights leading up to the Kelowna Apple Triathlon proved to be no obstacle for Ross Bell as he woke up just in time to grab a qualifying spot for the 2011 Olympic-distance Triathlon World Championships (to be held in Beijing, China in September 2011). It was cool and windy in Kelowna, BC on August 22nd as Ross powered through the swim/bike/run to finish in the top 10 of his age category. Ross credits a great season of training and racing, as well as the recent fine-tuning of his triathlon skills, for this accomplishment. Congrats to Ross!

Coach Zab Comes Out of Tri Retirement

IronStride Head Coach Randy Zabukovec ran his first triathlon in 12 years on Sunday August 22nd in Cornwall, Ontario. Competing in the Sprint event at the 2010 Cornwall Hospital Triathlon, Randy finished 7th overall and 1st out of 15 in his age category with a time of 1:10:44 - not bad after a 12-year hiatus! Overcoming obstacles such as a wet suit that came unzipped during the swim, a seat post that moved down during the ride, and very slippery road conditions due to the rain, Randy was undeterred, relaxed and up-beat through the entire event!

Also in Cornwall that day was IronStride run coach John Reid, as well as St. Lawrence College cross country athlete Lucas (Luke) Nutbrown - both competing in their first-ever duathlons. Coach Reid learned that he still has a lot to learn about cycling - the fastest runner in his age category in both run segments, his ride (which included a spectacular wipeout on the last turn of the slick course) lowered his placement to 5th out of 7. He is quoted as saying “I’ll be back next year with my bike in higher gear!”.

Luke, who hails from Harley, Ontario, had a great race for his first attempt at a duathlon - finishing 6th overall and 2nd in his age category. His two run segments were both excellent - 3rd and 4th overall. Luke also had a strong bike segment, even with a short encounter of body to pavement on the first 180-degree turn! Very fit and ready, Luke will now turn his attention to the upcoming Ontario College Cross Country season.

August 1st - Regensburg Ironman (Germany) - Adam Koven had a very strong swim and bike, finishing in 12:53 at this inaugural event. Kyla Smith also competed at Regensburg, conquering her 6th Ironman race.

August 8th - Vancouver IronStride athlete Colin Ward ran 16:56 in a western 5K as part of his preparation for the Vancouver Marathon.

August 15th - 1000 Islands Triathlon (Brockville ON) - on a windy day and just 3 weeks after completing his first Ironman event, Brett Lockerbie raced a 14-minute PB on the Olympic Tri course, finishing 4th in his age category. In the Sprint Tri event, Jairo Munoz won his age category and finished 9th overall.

August 22nd - Kelowna Apple Triathlon (Kelowna BC) - Ross Bell finished top 10 in his age category to qualify for next year’s Worlds in Beijing.

August 22nd - Cornwall Hospital Triathlon/Duathlon (Cornwall ON) - Randy Zabukovec finished 1st in his age category in the tri, while Lucas Nutbrown and John Reid enjoyed their first-ever duathlons.

August 28th/29th - Cobourg Triathlon/Duathlon (Cobourg ON) - Monica LaBarge finished 5th overall and 1st in her age category in the Olympic Tri. Also competing in the Olympic was Rick Hunt. In the Sprint Tri, Randy Zabukovec finished 3rd overall and 1st in his age category. Competing in the Sprint Du was Mike O’Reilly, taking 3rd spot in his age category.

August 29th - Ironman Canada (Penticton BC) - in her second Ironman event, Darlene Howe took almost 1-1/2 hours off of her 2009 Lake Placid time - finishing in 12:21. And Darlene would have had a much better result if it weren’t for some bad luck on the bike - a damaged rear wheel due to running over a water bottle, that slowed her down considerably.
